Safety is an important consideration for Birding Tours New Zealand:

Safety for the environment and the wildlife we are viewing

We must operate in a manner consistent with protecting and preserving the environment. An important feature of Birding Tours New Zealand operations is the small group approach which provides both a lower impact on the environment and a more enjoyable experience for the birder. We will not be travelling off tracks or in hazardous terrain.

As the old saying goes “Take nothing but photos and memories, and leave nothing but footprints”.

Safety for our visiting birders

Even more important is the attention given to the safety and well being of out clients. Some of our birding areas are remote even though we will remain close to highways and small towns. In the event of a medical emergency it is important to be aware of the precautions and procedures available to assistance can be obtained as quickly as practicably possible. First aid kits in tour vehicles.
These are a comprehensive St John’s and Red Cross approved first aid kit. Your guide is trained and certified in work place first aid, CPR, and Mountain First aid.

Fire Extinguishers.
Birding Tours New Zealand consistent with New Zealand Law is a smoke free company and smoking in vehicles is prohibited.

Smoking must be done in the designated areas.
Fire extinguishers are still carried as important safety equipment.

Communications.
It is important to provide accurate location details and communications in the event of a serious emergency. Cell phone, Portable mountain radio, Global Positioning System (GPS), and an emergency locator beacon (EPRB) will be available either in the vehicle or with the guide at all times. Cell coverage is excellent in most rural areas but coverage is not extensive in mountainous or remote areas.

Safety Management Plan

Health and Safety Legislation in New Zealand is extremely comprehensive.

A Safety Management plan is critical element of the Department of Conservation concession which is required for each approved eco tourism venture to operate in NZ. This plan is comprehensive covering all aspects of safety Hazard identification and management as well as the impact of Birding Tours New Zealand operations. Each operators plan must be externally audited to assure objectivity and uniformity. These plans are reviewed regularly to incorporate any changes or additions to the operators programme. This document is available for your inspection and comment.
